TWENTY-FOUR
B.J.’s live interview on Today was being scrutinized as if several lives depended on it. And in a sense they did. By the time her friends found out about the interview, the night before, they had quickly put their heads together and planned a viewing party. As they gathered at Jewel’s house they didn’t know what to expect.
What would she say?
Would she talk about some of the stories she was using in the book?
Was it a done deal?
Would they get anything from her appearance that could help them change her mind?
They were as nervous as B.J. herself. Jewel had ordered breakfast and had quite a spread waiting when her friends arrived.
“It’s been so long since I’ve been here,” Lawna said as she strolled in. On any other occasion, Jewel would’ve proudly shown off all the recent upgrades she had added to the house. But this wasn’t the time for that. She had barely slept the night before, worrying about what B.J. was about to reveal on national television.
Jewel even TiVoed the segment. When it was clear that B.J.’s interview was over, she stopped the recorder, then turned to her friends.
“Well, what’d you guys think?”
Mona didn’t respond right away. She placed her notepad on the coffee table and stifled a yawn.
Jewel wasn’t sure why Mona needed to take notes, even though the segment was being recorded, but she had stopped trying to figure out Mona’s actions long ago.
“I think we’re in a crapload of trouble,” Jewel said.
“Yeah, me too. That’s why I’ve been trying like crazy to get a hold of you guys. I can’t believe she went on national television to talk about this book. I guess if there was any doubt about whether she was really writing it, we can forget about that now, huh?” Lawna said.
Mona still hadn’t said a word.
She cut her Belgian waffle into perfectly sized pieces. The scrambled eggs were neatly moved to one side of the plate and away from three strips of bacon that sat opposite the eggs.
Jewel looked at her, but dismissed what she was doing. That was Mona, always meticulous with everything. Burgers were cut into four equal pieces, French fries perfectly lined up, and all of her food was in specific sections on her plate.
“I’m going to be ruined if B.J. tells all the shit I’ve been up to.” Jewel shook her head slowly as if her mind had already ventured to the worst possible case scenario.
“You? Now I’m wondering why the hell we trusted her the way we did,” Lawna added. “Think about it. We basically told this woman everything. And now that I’m thinking about it, B.J. wasn’t all that forthcoming with her own dirt.”
“So she’s been planning to do this all along?” Mona finally spoke up. But this time when she talked, it was as if she was simply thinking out loud. Her attention was still focused on getting her food right on her plate.
All heads whipped in her direction.
“What do you mean?” Jewel asked.
“What if she planned to write about us and our secrets from the beginning? Think about it.
